Appointment of Deemster

It is announced from Government House that, following the appointment of His Honour Deemster Corlett as Second Deemster, His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor has appointed Alastair Aitken Montgomerie as Deemster.

His Worship Deputy High Bailiff Montgomerie will preside over the Court of General Gaol Delivery. His Worship was educated at Fettes College Edinburgh, Manchester University and the College of Law and was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales on the 2 July 1979. From 1980 to 1991 he was involved in a wide range of criminal cases in England. He came over to the Island in 1991 and worked within the Attorney General’s Chambers.

Since June 2003 His Worship has held the position of Deputy High Bailiff and has acted as a panel Deemster from time to time presiding over numerous General Gaol matters. He is married and has two adult sons.

His Worship commented:

‘I am delighted that His Excellency has seen fit to appoint me as Deemster. I look forward to presiding over the Court of General Gaol Delivery. I am keen to make a continuing contribution to the administration of criminal justice
on this Island and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead.’
